Wurst Platter at Old Heidelberg in Helen

(…in honor of Oktoberfest, here are some weiners from June 7, 2015 for ya’ll!)
Open since 1975, Old Heidelberg in the heart of Helen, Georgia has become my favorite German restaurant when I’m visiting the folks in Helen. On Mother’s Day, me and my Mom chose a table on the tiny balcony overlooking the square.

We decided to share the wurst platter, an assortment of German sausages. Knackwurst looks like a bloated hot dog and with a similar texture and flavor, while the bratwurst and bauernwurst are chunkier cuts marbled with plenty of fat, flavored with garlic and herbs. Sauerkraut is a must, and we ordered two additional classic German sides, sweet and savory red cabbage and toothsome spaetzle. Wunderbar!
