My previous visits to The Southern Gentleman have included cocktails and snacks, but never a proper meal. This time, I was met by two gentlemen (only one of them Southern) for a late supper of Southern-inspired dishes.
Located in the Buckhead Atlanta development, the space is outfitted in tufted camel leather and seersucker, with touches of light blue. A large portrait of Mark Twain, the quintessential Southern gentleman, peeks out from behind a curtain of the private dining room. I arrived first and started with a refreshing Moscow mule served properly in a copper mug.
I also took the liberty to order three appetizers; Charred Okra, Bacon Deviled Eggs, and Corn Fritters. The plates arrived and so did my dining companions, ready to devour the Southern starters. Classic deviled eggs were ramped up with crisp bacon and spicy pickle chutney.
Halved lengthwise, the okra was pan-charred with ginger, shallots, and garlic for a tasty snack that we ate like fries. But the crispy corn fritters were the most decadently delicious treat, dusted with powdered sugar and dunked in maple syrup. They could double as dessert ya’ll!
One of the gentlemen was LC who ordered PEI Mussels in whiskey cream to round out his meal, while his business associate MR (a gentleman from Chicago) ordered the fried chicken…but not fried! Even at this late hour, the kitchen baked his chicken and he loved it.
Meanwhile, I followed LC’s lead and ordered another starter as my entree, the Wine-Poached Calamari. Definitely a departure from typical Southern fare, the delicate calamari was poached and served as a warm salad with fregola, radishes, cucumbers, and pistachios, dressed with a light citrus-herb vinaigrette. Simply fantastic.
The Southern Gentleman embodies Southern hospitality with great service and inventive comfort food, inviting guests to relax and stay a while.
