Sun in My Belly

Sun in My Belly PatioBefore she left for Omaha, I thought it would be fun for AD and I to have lunch at Sun in My Belly in Decatur. Formerly a frequent brunch guest there, I have fond memories of their hearty thick-sliced bacon, scrambled egg, and cheddar panini. AD loves sandwiches. The cafe’ offers a variety of brunch and lunch sandwiches, in addition to a dinner menu and a successful catering operation.

We parked in back walking through the tranquil dining room, decorated in muted shades of brown, to the patio out front. LH joined us, hoping to enjoy the only sunny day of AD’s Atlanta visit. Unfortunately, the patio is directly across from Marta…and active CSX train tracks.

Nevertheless, we ordered a round of iced teas and chatted in between the frequent screaching trains that passed. I was tempted to order my old standby or a daring combination of brie, prosciutto, and fig jam on house made herb focaccia, however, my BLT addiction made it impossible to resist their version with fried green tomatoes, one of my favorite Southern specialties.

Served on properly toasted sourdough with a generous schmear of pimento cheese, the hot sandwich became soggy on the bottom as it sat on the plate. Unlike the chewy bacon I recalled from the breakfast panini, the bacon on my BLT was seriously undercooked, while LH’s breakfast platter with scrambled eggs featured bacon that appeared to be burnt. Still, I was pleased with the flavor combination of the tangy fried green tomatoes and melty pimento cheese.
Brussels Sprouts Slaw at Sun in My Belly
Meanwhile, AD seemed quite content with her roast beef sandwich with horseradish cheddar and garlic aioli on sliced sourdough. We all chose the Brussels sprouts slaw with pistachios and lemon vinaigrette as our side, which failed to impress. The potatoes accidentally nestled up against my BLT, so I ate a few and found them tender and nicely seasoned.

Perhaps not their best performance, I would certainly visit Sun in My Belly again, but next time I’ll choose a cozy table inside and see if that brunch panini is still as delicious as I remember.
