Urban Explorers of Atlanta is an adventure-driven social club that brings together people who share a love of the city and enjoy discovering neighborhood gems. The mission is to have fun and make a difference.
As a member, I participated in a coat drive at Sweet Auburn BBQ and more recently, the monthly brunch at Cafe’ 458, an all volunteer restaurant that feeds the homeless during the week and serves brunch to paying customers on Sundays. All of the proceeds, even the servers’ tips, go to the Atlanta Center for Self-Sufficiency, an organization that provides assistance to homeless individuals.
Our group of 25 or so, some founding members and many new ones, got to know each other over excellent coffee. Then most of us ordered food, although it became clear that this was breakfast #2 for some early risers. Popular dishes included chicken and waffles, omelettes, sweet potato pancakes and country eggs benedict stacked on biscuits with chicken sausage gravy spooned on top.
My order was embarrassingly simple…scrambled eggs, bacon, and dry wheat toast. However, to execute a simple dish perfectly requires talent. Chef Tiffany Wills volunteers in the kitchen, preparing each plate with love. Cafe’ 458 did a fantastic job with my order. Fluffy eggs, chewy bacon, and dry toast, as requested. I nibbled on the pile of breakfast potatoes which were nicely seasoned.
Urban Explorers founder Steve Saenz later reported that Cafe’ 458 had more tables that morning than ever before, raising more money for a wonderful cause. We made a difference!
After brunch we set out along the Atlanta Streetcar route on the warmest day of the winter, feeling satisfied in more ways than one. That’s when the real fun began…
