Irwin Street Market’s Fried Green Tomato BLT

On a recent Urban Explorers recon mission at the Irwin Street Market I came upon a little sandwich shop that shares space with Jake’s Ice Cream. Although I didn’t see a sign, it’s called Picnic, and serves salads, sandwiches, and picnic style sides.

It was lunchtime and I was famished! Their “famous” fried green tomato BLT sounded fantastic. However, heavily breaded fried green tomatoes are my pet peave, so I inquired as to how they were prepared for this sandwich. I was informed the green tomatoes are lightly dredged in cornmeal and flour, then pan-fried, just like my Grandma used to make them.

The combination of oozy, melted pimento cheese, lettuce, tangy fried green tomatoes, and thick sliced bacon on grilled sourdough was the perfect Southern style BLT. I ate every bite, then walked over to Jake’s Ice Cream case where I ordered a pint of honey fig ice cream to take home. Not nearly as sweet as the same flavor by Honeysuckle Gelato, another local purveyor, Jake’s version was amazing, with chewy bits of fig throughout.
