Atlanta’s newest Japanese eatery is open for lunch and dinner in upscale new development

Doraku Sushi, the newly opened Japanese dining destination and latest addition to the Atlanta dining scene, now occupies prime real estate within Buckhead Atlanta. Sitting adjacent to the development’s luxe condominiums, The Residence, the intimate establishment offers a refined twist on traditional Japanese fare, drawing inspiration from Asian and Latin flavor profiles.

Kevin Aoki, son of Rocky Aoki, the mastermind behind Benihana, set out to continue his family’s hospitality-driven legacy with the formation of the Aoki Group and later, the development of Doraku Sushi. Aoki opened the first Doraku restaurant in South Beach, Miami, Fla. in an effort to redefine Japanese cuisine in the United States. With this new concept, Aoki opted for dishes to be served family style, positioning the restaurant as a destination for friends and family to gather and entertain. Doraku Sushi has since expanded nationwide, with five locations throughout the country, including two sites in Hawaii and two in Florida.

“We are thrilled to bring Doraku Sushi to Atlanta,” said Kevin Aoki. “The city’s welcoming attitude towards diverse culinary culture and style paired with its thriving food and beverage scene provides us with a great opportunity to captivate and establish this concept within a new market.”

The décor of the restaurant is reminiscent of a Japanese teahouse embellished with distinctive Asian aesthetics. The full service bar, complete with rustic wooden countertops, takes center stage in the main dining room as Japanese lanterns suspend from above, providing a romantic ambiance for diners.

The menu boasts a vast mix of popular sushi and Asian-fusion dishes, all prepared with seasonal, fresh ingredients as well as a unique variety of specialty fish from both local and global markets such as live scallops and uni, and sea urchin from Santa Barbara. Signature items from the menu include emperor roll featuring tuna, salmon, crab, shrimp, and avocado rolled rice-less with nori and breaded with panko; Alaskan cod nanbanzuke with shaved red onion, jalapeno, cilantro, and yuzu chili ponzu; and kagu tsuchi “god of fire” roll made with spicy tuna and cucumber topped with tuna, jalapeno, masago, and spicy aioli.

Additionally, Doraku Sushi’s highly acclaimed sake menu is one of the most extensive lists in the country. To maintain the impressive stature of the beverage program, each year a management team travels overseas to Japan with the sole task of selecting an exclusive and diverse sake selection from local micro-distilleries.
