Lovell Bros. Debuts Homegrown Spirits

In honor of my great grandaddy who was a Georgia moonshiner, here’s some news to sip and savor from Breck at The Reynolds Group:

Georgia whiskey producer Ivy Mountain Distillery is excited to debut its new signature label, Lovell Bros. Sour Mash Whiskey and Sour Mash Spirit. The latest product line from Mt. Airy, Ga., employs the same 150-year-old family recipe, tradition and spirits as it always has, giving today’s generation a taste of history with every sip.

What began as an illegal moonshine operation has now blossomed into Georgia’s largest supply of sour mash whiskey. More than 60 years ago, brothers Carlos and Fred Lovell disbanded the family moonshine operation after a run-in with the law and Carlos found a new vocation as a land developer. In 2011, his passion for making whiskey pulled him back to the family business and with the help of his daughter, co-owner Carlene Holder, a new incarnation of the Mt. Airy distillery was born.

“Tradition and whiskey have always been the cornerstone of my family,” says Carlene Holder. “So, when my father wanted to bring back the legacy of my lineage I couldn’t help but jump at the chance to help. Lovell Bros. Whiskey is our chance to bring a little bit of history to the burgeoning craft spirits world.”

Continuing the same production and distillation processes that Carlos learned when he was just 15 years old, Lovell Bros. utilizes a basic copper steam still and boiler to create their spirits. Although the process plays a large part in the exceptional flavor of Lovell Bros. whiskey, the not-so-secret, “secret ingredients” remain the heart and soul of the brand. Locally sourced ingredients, such as Habersham County spring water and sweet Georgia corn, aid in keeping the Lovell tradition alive. Additionally, Master Distiller Carlos Lovell’s innate instinct for knowing exactly when the corn is ready for fermentation and just when to toss in a handful of barley before the batch has reached its peak flavor, ensures the quality and consistency of his product.

Created out of a passion for tradition and authenticity, Lovell Bros. offers two of the finest hand-crafted Georgia spirits on the market:

LOVELL BROS. Sour Mash Whiskey – Georgia corn spirits aged in American oak barrels, imparting rich color and balance to define the smooth flavor, enjoyed perfectly neat or mixed beautifully for a cocktail.

LOVELL BROS. Sour Mash White Whiskey – Clear as the Georgia mountain spring water, sweet as the local corn from which it’s made, Lovell Bros. Sour Mash white whiskey can be enjoyed neat, with a splash of water to release its nose or as an enhancement in cocktails.

Lovell Bros. can be found at several retailers and restaurants. Tours of the distillery are offered on the first Tuesday and third Friday of every month, two times a day, at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
