LC and I had the pleasure of joining fellow bloggers Grant and Marie of Marie, Let’s Eat! for a casual meal at Verde Tacos in Brookhaven. We are taco enthusiasts, and as I warned Grant, find it nearly impossible to dine at any Mexican establishment without spending a hundred bucks on tequila!
We arrived to find them sitting at a high-top with another blogger, Val of A Scrumptious Life, who lives nearby. Unfortunately, Marie was a bit under the weather. The shot of tequila she had prior to our arrival did little to help. Not surprisingly, LC and I started with some tequila as well with two of their organic margaritas, and we ordered some queso with jalapenos and guacamole to share.
When a table on the patio came available, we snagged it, hoping the fresh air would revive Marie. The outdoor table was more quiet and relaxing, with a refreshing spring breeze. We chatted and worked on baskets of freshly made chips and better than average queso and guacamole, then made our taco selections from the list of thirteen.
LC chose a grilled fish taco, as he often does, and another with pulled pork, while I tried a short rib and a fried calamari taco, all on corn tortillas. Fried calamari is an odd choice for me, but when Val mentioned they include fried sliced jalapenos, I was sold. Before our tacos arrived, our second round of margaritas did, along with two additional shots of tequila (approaching the $50 mark).
Is it possible to have too much meat in a taco? Yes. My short rib taco was overstuffed with meat and shredded cheese, becoming soggy and unmanageable halfway through. I dressed my calamari taco with guacamole and took a bite…crunchy cabbage, crispy fried calamari, but sadly no fried jalapenos, leaving the flavor a bit flat. Although the squid was tender and not greasy, the batter lacked seasoning. LC’s choices turned out to be better.
Verde is the kind of place we would visit on a regular basis if we lived in the neighborhood. We enjoyed the atmosphere and service was speedy, but the tacos weren’t nearly as awesome as the one’s at our neighborhood favorite, El Taco.
